The Fast Food Connection to Music

11 Apr

I have no proof for my Whopper theory, but I have a sneaking suspicion “Carry Out”, the new collaboration from Timbaland and Justin Timberlake is sponsored by Burger King. If it isn’t then BK should be paying the two artists for inspiring people to run to their local fast food joint.

The song is in reference to fast food but if you listen to the lyrics there is one line that suggests maybe Burger King had a hand in the creation of this song. I could be completely wrong but the lyric “have it your way” is blatantly obvious that they are referencing Burger King’s slogan. However, the song is about fast food and they also mention IHOP which makes me wonder if they were incorporating BK’s slogan because it fits in nicely with the theme of servicing a girl they like.

This isn’t the first time Timberlake has had ties to fast food. The song “I’m Lovin’ It” was commissioned by McDonald’s to compliment their ad campaign also of the same name. Along with saying, ‘I’m lovin’ it’ several times in the chorus Timberlake sang the famous jingle ‘ba da ba ba ba…I’m lovin’ it”.

The video is not set in a McDonald’s, nor do you see signs of the restaurant but Timberlake sings about how “you deserve to get down, you’ve been working hard all week, just trying to make some money” which can be interpreted for you’ve been working hard you deserve a break you deserve to go to Mickey D’s?

Whether or not these videos/songs have any affect on if you go to their restaurants one thing is for certain and that is by the end of listening and/or watching you will probably feel a lot hungrier.

Cupcake Heaven In Paris

14 Mar

Checking out the selection of goodies!

Mmm delicious cupcakes. What comes to mind when you think of that creamy frosting, chewy goodness and sweet flavour? I think heaven and I think I found exactly that in Paris. Toronto has its fair share of cupcake shops but how does Berko of Paris compare to T.O.’s finest? They rank pretty high in my books. Thanks to a cream cheese-like frosting, the cupcakes at Berko were extra sweet and with flavours like Crème Brûlée, Mascarpone Tiramisu and Praliné Cœur de Nutella, how can you go wrong? Not only do these cupcakes have french flair, (Cœur de Lion cream cheese, Poire caramel chocolat noisette) they are also made with the finest local ingredients.

We went to the location at 23 rue Rambuteau. Actually we stumbled upon it quite accidentally. After taking in the modern art at The Pompidou we were walking down rue Rambuteau and saw an amazingly decorated cake in the window and a sign that read “cream cheese cupcakes.” Naturally, that got my attention and I decided to walk in. Upon entering I was stunned to see the 40 or more choices of cupcakes in the window.

Now how to decide? Chocolate isn’t just chocolate in this store. Do you want dark chocolate, white chocolate, Nutella, chocolate chip, chocolat noisette? I went with the old standard, OREO and white chocolate raspberry…yummm!

To those cupcake diehards who think they’ve tried it all, I dare you to try one from Berko. Next time you are in the Paris area, visit one of their locations, 23 rue Rambuteau or 31 rue Lepic. They are open Tuesday to Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

My choice: raspberry and white chocolate.

I'm happy as a clam with my purchases!

Finding Cool in one of Paris’ Most Fashionable Districts

12 Mar

Manoush: A store with eye candy clothing

Le Marais, an area in Paris with parts in the 3rd and 4th arrondissements. Known for cool chain clothing stores like Zadig and Voltaire, Sandro, Manoush, Paul & Joe and also for eclectic independent boutiques.

Le Marais is littered with beautiful leggy french women, stylish guys, French hipsters and fashionistas alike. It was hard to find a store I didn’t like, because everything in the area radiated cool.

First we went to Manoush, which has to be an Alice In Wonderland candy store for clothing. The colourful accessories and unique shoes made the store seem more like a museum than a place to shop.

It's all in the details

Outside Manoush

The Marais

Next we travelled across the street to a funky chain store called Paul and Joe’s Sister. Clothes don’t come cheap in this area. You can expect to spend anywhere between 40 and 700 Euros.

Paul and Joe: A store with amazing design, both clothing and decor

Outside Zadig & Voltaire - Rock & Roll meets couture

Zadig and Voltaire, easily one of my favourite stores because of the rock n’ roll edge it had to it. Black skinny jeans with ragged edges and studded leather jackets can be found in this cute boutique. Definitely expect to spend 80 Euros on a quirky t-shirt.

Creative displays can be seen in many of the stores in The Marais

PodCamp Toronto 2010

February 20 to 21, 2010

Rogers Communications Centre at Ryerson University

Ah PodCamp…a great event that demands your full attention. Can you handle the responsibility of learning from great veteran speakers and ambitious newbies this weekend?

If you have never been to a camp before or even if you have and you saw the schedule of events on podcamptoronto.com, it’s enough to intimidate the most fearless of conference hoppers.
Fear not young PodCampers! If you are ready to tackle PCT 2010, I assure you it will be a fun and exciting weekend.

The PodCamp Challenge:

  • Pick 5 sessions that stand out to you – Attend at least 5 sessions if you can. You may not want to stay for the whole weekend as a first timer but if you are going to come out, make it worthwhile and attend a few sessions you think you will enjoy.
  • It doesn’t matter which sessions you attend – The great thing about PodCamp is you learn from everyone. You learn from the speakers, from the people you network with and that includes the time in between sessions.
  • Meet at least 5 new people – That shouldn’t be hard to do considering PCT attracts hundreds to its event every year.
  • Write down people’s Twitter handles and other contact information – Be sure to follow up with them post-event.
  • Bring some business cards – Even if you are student, there are cheap and easy ways to get your information down on a piece of paper to hand out to people.
  • Take a recording device – Bring a video camera, digital camera, paper and pen or computer and share your ideas with other people who attended.
  • Attend the after parties – Sure this sounds like fun..and it is but it is also a great way to meet people and network in a social setting.
  • Follow the Twitter stream @PodCampToronto, to hear what people are saying about the event in real time.
  • Take notes, learn, take more notes, ask questions and soak up as much information as you can.

If you are very new to the world of social media, attend these sessions:

  • Podcasting for Amateurs: It’s Priceless
  • Social Media 101
  • The PodCamp Three (or Maybe Four or Even Five)

The bottom line is anyone who attends PodCamp is in a unique position to collect and absorb a ton of insight from leading experts for free! This event is one of the best because of the quality of speakers and knowledge that is shared over the course of the weekend. So get as much as you can out of PCT 2010 and have fun!
