Not since the days of Teletubbies have I felt so compelled to watch children’s television. Enter Yo Gabba Gabba, a popular Nick Jr. tv show that airs on Treehouse TV network in Canada. It is a part human, part costume character show, that has animated segments and musical performances.

Since the series premiered in August 2007, some notable guest stars have made appearances on the show, including Elijah Wood, Tony Hawk, The Shins, The Ting Tings and Biz Markie, a regular who teaches kids how to beatbox in his segment, Biz’s Beat of the Day.

Maybe the success of the show has something to do with the fact that hip parents don’t mind watching along with their children if there is something in it for them.

Here is a clip from the show, when the Ting Tings made an appearance.

Everyone is Cashing In On The Success of Obama

22 Jan

First there was will.i.am’s “Yes We Can” music video followed by his post-election “It’s A New Day” video that debuted on Oprah. Now French electronic music duo, Daft Punk are riding the wave of Obama mania to draw attention to themselves with their new attempt, “Aer OBAMA” a collaboration between DP and Adam Freeland, a UK-based DJ and producer.

Now don’t get me wrong, I am all for Obama related music videos. Considering this is such an important moment in history, I am all for people celebrating through song, dance or however they choose to honour the man. I just think it’s funny that Daft Punk are releasing a new video that is like every other Daft Punk song with the exception of spelling out the President’s name continuously throughout the song.

WordPress Launches WordPress TV

19 Jan

The blogging platform WordPress has launched an online TV station called WordPress.tv. Touted as tutorial central, it is “your visual reference for all things WordPress.”

Instead of going to all the WordCamps around the world, you can watch videos from previous WordCamps, including a slue of WordCamp Toronto videos that we made last October at WCT ’08.

If you are a visual learner like me, you’ll appreciate not having to sift through forums and 200 pages of a manual to learn how to use WP effectively.

Finding the Right Winter Boots

16 Jan

There are only two things I like about winter. Snowboarding and ice skating. When not participating in either of these activities, I am usually indoors or doing everything I can to avoid the cold.

As cold as it can be outside during the winter, the snow presents a whole new set of problems. For me, it is finding a pair of winter boots that will keep me warm but be stylish enough to wear around town.

For the past two years I have been wearing either my heavy duty white snow boots, which although warm and waterproof, are disproportionately big and when paired with my white parka make me look like the Michelin woman.

My alternative to the snow boots are a pair of suede boots which are actually not meant for the snow at all and usually get wet as soon as they touch a millimeter of snow, which leave me with cold, wet feet and feeling very uncomfortable.

After much frustration with wearing these two pairs of shoes, I decided I must find a pair that were practical and stylish. At the beginning of my search, I was very optimistic. However, weeks and weeks of searching for winter boots with no success became increasingly frustrated.

There were leather boots that were two thin to wear during the extreme cold weather days. There were boots that were too furry, too expensive, too cheap-looking and the list goes on.

For weeks I went without finding the right pair of boots, until… one day, I found the pair I was looking for!

Enter Joe Fresh, a favourite clothing store of mine and one of the best sources for affordable trendy clothes.

After a long day at work, I decided to pop into Joe Fresh at St. Clair and Bathurst. There they were, right in front of me, in my size. Stylish, practical, everything I was looking for in a boot.

Half rubber boot, half riding boot, all mine! You can always count on Joe to be there when you need him.

Has anyone else had this winter boot dilemma?
